WE NEED COOKIES!!!

We still need LOTS of cookies for the Live Nativity. If you are going to Publix or Walmart, please pick up some store bought cookies (or make some homemade ones) and drop them by the TrinityKids office or the front desk! Thank you!!!!

A Nativity Activity!

On this last week before Christmas, spend a little time each day with the characters from your nativity scene.

Monday: Angel
The Angel Gabriel came to tell Mary and Joseph about baby Jesus. What would you do if an angel visited you? Have angel food cake for dessert tonight in honor of Gabriel.

Tuesday: Mary
Mary was a young girl with no husband. Do you think she might have been surprised and afraid when Gabriel told her she was going to have the Son of God? She probably was, but did she obey God anyway? Yes, she did. She told Gabriel she was the Lord’s servant. How can you serve God and your family today? Talk to your family about what it was like when your Mom was pregnant with you. Could she feel you moving in her tummy?

Wednesday: Joseph
The scripture tells us that Joseph was a righteous man. That means he loved God and obeyed His Word. God chose righteous parents for Jesus so they could be a good example to him. How do you think Joseph felt when he found out he would be the earthly father to Jesus? Give the dads in your family a call or a big hug and thank them for being a good example to you!

Thursday: Shepherds
After seeing Jesus, the shepherds didn’t just go back to their sheep. They spread the word about what they had seen and they started praising God. Think of one new thing you’ve learned about Jesus’ birth. Then tell someone about it! After you’ve done it, praise God like the shepherds did!

Friday: Kings
The Bible doesn’t really tell us there were only three wise men. Just that there were three gifts. Regardless of how many were there, we know that they had been on a long journey to find Jesus. Imagine not knowing where you were going and following a star, just so you could find a little baby. Their dedication in looking for Jesus shows how amazing it is that God’s Son. Think of three gifts you'd like to give Jesus for his birthday this year. What do you think Jesus would like for his Birthday?

Saturday: Jesus
Do you remember your baby bed? What color was it? Was it soft? Jesus didn’t have a bed when he was a baby. After He was born, His mom and dad had to lay Him in an animal’s feeding trough. How do you think Jesus felt laying in the manger? How did Mary and Joseph feel? Cut up a brown grocery bag or other paper to make a soft bed for your baby Jesus.

Sunday: Happy Birthday Jesus!
With everything going on on Christmas day, it can be hard to remember we are celebrating Jesus' birthday. Remember to take time to sing Happy Birthday to Jesus. Be sure to tell your family and friends all you've learned about the nativity characters this year! Merry Christmas!

The Reason for the Season!

Talking about Christmas as the celebration of Jesus' birthday can help children to link the celebration of Christmas with the story of His birth. To add to the birthday celebration, bake a cake for the Baby Jesus! Don't forget to make a wish when you blow out the candles! What do you think Jesus would wish for?

- Make a birthday cake for Jesus
- Decide on a Family Mission project for Christmas
- Bake cookies for a neighbor
- Talk about your nativity scene together
- Take turns reading from scripture or a Bible storybook about the birth of Jesus
- Make a birthday card for Jesus
- Give your kids 3 christmas presents this year. (Jesus got three presents for his birthday)
- Dress up like Mary, Joseph, the Wise Men and the Shepherds and put on a play
- Give up a meal and donate that money to the needy

Is Step Into Africa Too Scary for Kids?

Hi Friends

Several of you have asked me about the appropriateness of the Step Into Africa for kids. I didn't see all four of the children's stories. But, I can tell you that Baribye's story, other than it being real, is no more disturbing than a Disney movie. In fact, I thought it was a great story, especially for older elementary kids, to experience. It is disturbing to be sure. But, there is a happy ending.

As far as little children, I would say that they will probably enjoy and benefit from walking through without headphones. By walking through the exhibit, they will get to experience what life in Africa can be like. This will give you the opportunity to explain at the level you think is appropriate for your own children.

So, for what it is worth, that is what I think. Please don't miss out on this amazing opportunity no matter what age you are!

Best,
Monique

Bring In Some Candy!!

Don't forget to bring in some Halloween candy for the upcoming Trunk or Treat on Oct 30th. Any and all donations of wrapped candy is appreciated!

We're Not Perfect... We're Parents!

We like the Nick Jr channel at our house. Often there is a commercial with these very words. "We're not perfect. We're parents." I'm not sure about you.. But, I'm thinking that our lives would all be a bit more worry free if we would take this little mantra to heart. Wouldn't it be great if we could accept ourselves and our fellow parents as imperfect? Then, we would be free to talk about the trials and tribulations of all this crazy parenting stuff and, maybe just maybe, allow Jesus to be present in our struggles to raise our kids.

Now, don't get me wrong. Nothing has prompted this post other than the hope that the church could possibly be as loving and accepting as Nick Jr commercials. The truth is we all need each other, and a little bit tv time for our kids at times, to make it through the parenting years. Don't you agree?

At TrinityKids, we're always reminding the kids of their two big jobs as Christians. 1. Love God. 2. Love Your Neighbors. As fellow parents, lets accept our call to love God, love our neighbors (other parents) and create a community of support for one another.

Neither children nor parents should feel like we're in a competition. If we feel this way, we are surely failing ourselves, God and our neighbors. Instead, let's remember that we're not perfect. We're just parents...

What Are You Reading?

Hi Friends,

I just started this great book entitled, The Rhythm of Family: Discovering A Sense of Wonder Through the Seasons by Amanda Blake Soule.

Soule is the author of several books about cooking, crafting and creating a simple and simplified household with great appreciation for the beauty of the seasons and the adventure in the every day.

Though I'll never achieve her "granola-ness," I've appreciated her message and as I aspire to create the best childhood experiences for my family.

I thought you might also appreciate this quote from the intro of this book:

"Wonderful things happen in our family when we choose to move slowly through our days. When we stop running and rushing about, we discover more time, energy and space for the things most important in our lives. By slowing down, our connections with our children and as a family inherently become deeper, our creativity thrives and we find meaningful ways to fill our time. The natural world can serve as both inspiration and reward on this journey. For it, too, is ever changing and constantly in motion. As both plants and animals grow, there is an ever present awareness of both birth and death, and the constant passage of time. But, this passage of time is a subtle one. One that could be missed if we check in on it infrequently. It is only by spending time in the natural world, by paying attention and noticing, that we see these important changes the earth experiences. This natural rhythm, this subtle changing of the seasons, can act as the heartbeat of our lives. By paying careful attention to the world around us, the slow and even pace can become one that we draw upon in our family lives as well. It can be the rhythm that we all need."

This is where you come in! We need 1-2 volunteers per challenge. The event is Sunday, Oct 23rd during the 9:40 service only. So, plan to arrive at 9:15 and leave a little after 11am. Most of the challenges are

coffee and a camping chair and sit back and relax while people make
fools of themselves for their kids!

Age Appropriate Bible Suggestions

Hi Friends

Several of you have asked me which Bibles I prefer for different age groups. Here are the ones I like. I'm sure there are others.

Baby Bible: Baby's First Bible by Colin MacLean
(This is a sturdy board book that will hold up to little people.)

Preschool: The Beginners Bible by Zonderkidz
(Good, preschool friendly illustrations and word choices.)

Kindergarten: The Jesus Storybook Bible by Sandy Lloyd-Jones
(Beautiful illustrations and ways to tie all parts of scripture to Jesus)

First and Second Grade:Kids Devotional Bible NIrV by Joanne E. DeJonge
(Good wording for early elementary. Nice devotionals for kids.)

Third, Fourth, Fifth Grade: The Kids Devotional Bible by Zondervan
(This is our Third Grade Bible. A great study Bible for this age.

Some time around middle school, I feel like kids should have one study bible with good footnotes and another compact, sturdy Bible for youth group trips, Sunday School etc.

I'd love to hear some of your choices!

Best,
Monique

Fruit Wrap Up!

Hey Families!

So, we're about to wrap up a fruit-filled summer of learning about the fruits of the spirit! Both in Summertime Fun and Sunday School we've talked about most of the Fruits of the Spirit including love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control!

How has learning about these "fruits" impacted your kids? Are they thinking about love, and kindness a little more? What about self control? What have you been doing at home to work on these attributes of Christian behavior? We'd love to hear from you!

Announcements!

Come One. Come All! Family Ministry Festival: Mark your calendars for August 17th from 5:30 to 7:30. We will be having a fun night of food, carnival games, bounce houses and crafts. Most importantly, there will be crafts and activities to help your family have devotion time at home and information about ministry opportunities starting this fall. Invite a friend or neighbor and receive 5 free game/food tickets! Contact Emily if you'd like to volunteer! We’ll need help with games, food, setup and cleanup!

Self Control!

Self control, the last Fruit of the Spirit, was this past Sunday's lesson! Preschoolers were given the daunting task of waiting until AFTER they ate lunch to open a paper bag filled with a few starbursts. It was great to watch them all walk out of church and talk about their bag! How did your preschooler do? Did anyone take the challenge to wait until AFTER DINNER??? (We DID NOT make it to dinner at our house... Though, I didn't have to do quite as much begging to get Teddy to finish his lunch!)

Elementary Kids watched this great video called "The Marshmallow Test" in Together Time and did different activities about self control in their rotations. K-1st watched a clip about Alex the Lion controlling his hunger from Madagascar, 2nd-3rd made banana s'mores and 4th,5th,6th played a relay game by rolling lemons with plastic spoons. It was a great morning!

Here is the link to the Together Time video if you'd like to watch it! You'll be glad to know that most of the kids thought they could manage this challenge!! What do you think?
